Will AI dictation rewrite what I said? What Zefmi's clean-up changes, and what Word for word keeps

Updated 31 Oct 2026

Short answer

No. The clean-up removes fillers, repeats and false starts, keeps only your correction when you correct yourself, and fixes punctuation. It is told to keep every fact and word choice. Word for word mode switches it off and types exactly what you said.

What does the clean-up change?

When people speak, they say "um", repeat words and correct themselves. Plain dictation types all of that. Zefmi's clean-up tidies it before the text reaches your app. It is on at the Light level by default.

  • Removes fillers such as "um", "uh", "you know" and "like".
  • Removes false starts, stutters and repeated words.
  • When you correct yourself ("no wait", "I mean", "scrap that"), keeps only the correction.
  • Fixes punctuation and capital letters. "New line" and "new paragraph" become line breaks, and spoken lists become lists.
  • Keeps your language: a sentence dictated in Chinese stays in Chinese.

What does it look like?

Illustrative examples we wrote for this page, not measured output. Real results vary with what you say and how it is heard.

You sayClean-up types (default)Word for word types
"Um, can you send me the, the Q3 numbers before Thursday, no wait, before Wednesday's call?""Can you send me the Q3 numbers before Wednesday's call?""Um, can you send me the, the Q3 numbers before Thursday, no wait, before Wednesday's call?"
"So I think we should, we should, like, go with the second option""So I think we should go with the second option.""So I think we should, we should, like, go with the second option"
"What time does the meeting start""What time does the meeting start?" (typed, not answered)"What time does the meeting start"

The third row matters: the clean-up is told never to answer a question in your text and never to obey an instruction in it. A dictated question is typed as a question.

What does Word for word mode do?

It types every word as spoken, without the clean-up. Use it for a quote, a legal wording, or any time you want your own wording untouched. It is a chip on the floating bar, so you can switch per message.

Does it change my meaning or tone?

It is told to keep every fact and word choice. It is not a writing assistant: it does not change your argument or add ideas. If you want a rewrite of text you have already written, Zefmi has a separate Polish action on text you select. Read the result before you send it; no clean-up is perfect.

Can I change the style?

The clean-up follows a style: formal (full punctuation and capitals), casual (light punctuation, relaxed tone) or very casual (all lowercase, minimal punctuation, like a quick chat message).

Can I make it spell my names right?

Yes. Words in your personal dictionary are spelled exactly as you entered them whenever they appear.

Where does the text go?

The text is sent to an AI model for the clean-up, through OpenRouter, set to use only providers that do not log or train on prompts. Our server does not keep your text or audio. Providers and their policies are listed on the security page. The clean-up can also read a little of the text around your cursor to match names and tone; that can be switched off, and password fields are never read.
