Is a paid dictation app better than Apple Dictation or Windows voice typing?

Updated 31 Oct 2026

Often not. Windows voice typing (Win+H), Apple Dictation and Gboard are free and fine for short notes. A paid app such as Zefmi or Wispr Flow earns its price if you dictate long text and want fillers removed, punctuation added and the same result in every app.

Written by Zefmi, the maker of one of the apps compared, so we are not neutral. Updated 30 Oct 2026. We read Microsoft's, Apple's and Google's help pages that day and wrote what we found in our own words. The links are under the table.

Built-in is enough if

  • You dictate short notes or messages.
  • You do not mind saying punctuation or tidying up fillers.
  • You want to pay nothing.
  • You use a Mac or a phone: Zefmi is Windows only for now, and Apple Dictation and Gboard are already there.

Pick Zefmi if

  • You use Windows and want fillers and false starts removed for you.
  • You write long emails and documents by voice.
  • You speak Cantonese or Mandarin as well as English.
  • You want one key that works the same in every app.

Is Wispr Flow better than Apple Dictation?

It depends what you need. Wispr Flow adds a dictionary, snippets and apps on Windows, iPhone and Android, and it costs $15 a user a month after its free 2,000 words a week. Apple Dictation is free and built into every Mac. We have not tested either for accuracy, so we will not say one is more accurate. See Wispr Flow pricing.

Does Windows 11 have a dictation program?

Yes. Press the Windows key and H in any text box. Our dictation for Windows page covers where it stops being enough.

Short, honest answers. Ask anything else at support@zefmi.com.

Is a paid dictation app better than built-in dictation?

Not always. For short notes, the free built-ins are enough. A paid app helps if you dictate long text and want fillers removed, punctuation added and the same behaviour in every app.

Does Windows 11 have dictation?

Yes. Press the Windows key and H to start voice typing in any text box. It needs an internet connection. See dictation for Windows.

Does Mac have dictation?

Yes. Turn it on in Keyboard settings, then press the Microphone key or your Dictation shortcut. Our Mac dictation guide walks through it. Zefmi has no Mac app yet.

Why pay for Zefmi when dictation is free?

Zefmi adds an AI clean-up that removes fillers, repeats and false starts, keeps your corrections and adds punctuation, with a Word for word switch if you want none of that.

Does Zefmi work offline?

No. Zefmi needs an internet connection, because the speech recognition runs online.
