Who can dictation help?
Some people think faster than they type, some find spelling hard, and some find a long typing session uncomfortable. Saying the words and having them typed can make writing easier. We make no medical claim: everyone is different, so try a free tool first and see whether speaking suits you. Zefmi works as a dictation app on Windows.
What free tools can I try first?
On Windows, press Win+H to start voice typing in any text box. See Microsoft's voice typing guide. On Mac, turn on Dictation in System Settings, then Keyboard. See Apple's Dictation guide.
Does dictation help with ADHD?
Some people find it easier to talk a first draft out than to face a blank page. The clean-up removes ums and false starts, so a rambling spoken thought comes out as readable text. If you want every word as spoken, switch to Word for word mode. We have no study to cite, and Zefmi is not a treatment for ADHD.
Does dictation help with RSI?
It can reduce typing. The honest limit: RSI users often need to control the whole computer by voice, which is voice control (for example Dragon, Talon or Windows Voice Access). Zefmi types text only. It does not open apps, click or edit by voice.
Does dictation help with dyslexia?
Speaking removes spelling from the first draft, and the clean-up adds punctuation and capitals. You still need to read the result once before you send it, because speech recognition makes mistakes too. Words it keeps getting wrong can be added to your dictionary in the app.
Do I have to hold a key the whole time?
No. There are two ways to start. Hold to talk: hold Alt+Space while you speak and let go to finish. Hands-free: press Ctrl+Win+Space to start, speak for as long as you like, press it again to finish, or press Esc to cancel. The buttons on the floating bar (a cross to cancel, a tick to finish) also end a hands-free session. Both shortcuts can be changed in the app.
What can Zefmi not do?
- It types; it does not open apps, click buttons or edit by voice.
- It needs an internet connection and your voice, so it is no use if you cannot speak aloud.
- It is not a medical device and makes no promise about health or recovery. If typing hurts, talk to a doctor or therapist.
Can I try it without paying?
Yes. The 14-day free trial (10,000 words, 1 device) starts with your first dictation. Questions about whether it fits your needs? Email support@zefmi.com and a person replies.
Shortcuts are the defaults in the current Windows build.
