Which apps can you dictate into?

How does dictating into any app work?

A system-wide dictation tool does not need to know which app you are in. It types at your cursor. With Zefmi on Windows: click in a text box, hold Alt+Space (you can change the key), speak, let go. Zefmi types at the cursor by pasting, the way Ctrl+V does, so it works in any Windows app that accepts a paste. We have not yet published a per-app test list.

Which apps have their own dictation?

Word has a Dictate button for Microsoft 365 subscribers, and Google Docs has voice typing in the Tools menu. These only work inside that one app. See dictate in Word and voice typing in Google Docs.

Can I dictate in Gmail and Outlook?

Yes. In a browser or a desktop mail app, the message body is a text box. Click in it, hold your key and speak. Win+H on Windows works the same way, and is free. With Zefmi: hold your key, say the email, let go; filler words and false starts are removed and punctuation is added. Use Word for word mode if you are quoting someone exactly. Read it once before you send. Names and email addresses are quicker to type than to say. A longer walk-through is on dictating email.

Can I dictate in Slack?

Yes. The message box and thread replies are text boxes. Hold your key, speak, let go, read it and press Enter. Type @mentions and channel names by hand; that is quicker. Zefmi types text only; it does not run Slack commands.

Can I dictate in Notion?

Yes. Click in the block where the text should go, hold your key and speak. Meeting notes straight after the meeting and first drafts are good uses. Zefmi types text only; it does not create blocks or run Notion commands by voice.

Can I dictate in WhatsApp?

You can type a reply by voice in WhatsApp Desktop or Web. Zefmi does not turn voice notes you receive into text. See WhatsApp voice to text.

Where does dictation not work?

Dictation needs a place to type. If an app has no text box with a cursor, there is nothing to type into. Zefmi also needs an internet connection and runs on Windows only today; Mac, iPhone and Android are coming. There is no Linux version. Some company-managed PCs block new apps or paste.
