How to use voice typing in Google Docs

Updated 31 Oct 2026

Short answer

In Google Docs, click Tools, then Voice typing, then click the microphone and speak. It works in recent versions of Chrome, Edge and Safari. Click the microphone again to stop.

Start voice typing

  1. Open a document in Google Docs.
  2. Click Tools, then Voice typing. A microphone box appears.
  3. Click the microphone and speak.
  4. Click the microphone again when you are done.

Voice typing only works inside Google Docs. For dictation in every app, including Gmail and chat, see dictation in any app.

Which browsers work

Google says voice typing works with the latest versions of Chrome, Edge and Safari.

Punctuation commands

Say "period", "comma", "exclamation point", "question mark", "new line" or "new paragraph". Google notes that these voice commands work only in English, and both your account language and the document language must be English.

Speaker notes in Google Slides

In Slides, click Tools, then Dictate speaker notes. Voice commands are not available there.

All of the above comes from Google's voice typing guide, checked on 30 Oct 2026.
